Anne and I wish you and your family a Happy Fourth of July!
As we gather with our family, friends, and fellow Americans to celebrate the declaration of our independence, it is sobering to think about the immense sacrifice that has perpetuated the greatest experiment in liberty and democracy for 241 years. Our nation is home to so many brave men and women who dedicated their lives to protecting our homeland and securing our freedom. As the saying goes, we are the “land of the free” because we are the “home of the brave”. I am proud to represent West Texas — and especially the men and women in uniform as well as the nearly 40,000 veterans who call this place home. The Fourth of July is another opportunity to say thank you to these heroes.
In addition to those who fought to secure and maintain our independence, we remember our Founding Fathers. Those courageous patriots who, at much risk and peril to their families, declared an end to their former system of government in exchange for a constitutional republic that would give birth to the most prosperous and free nation in the history of the world. Although it’s been almost two and half centuries since those brave men disavowed their allegiance to the British Crown, the less conspicuous tyranny of big government with its excessive taxes, regulations, and spending threaten our freedom and prosperity as a republic today.
Upon exiting the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin was approached by citizens asking what sort of government the delegates had created. Franklin’s answer was, “A republic, if you can keep it.”
While we pause to celebrate and remember God’s guiding hand upon this great day in our nation’s history, we must continue the fight to keep this republic safe and secure for our children and grandchildren.
